Who IS she?

I thought it would probably be a good idea to tell you a bit about me. Who am I? What do I do? Why do I think I know ANYTHING?

Well, I am Claire Platt and as I said in the first ever Enlightened Singer post, I have been a professional singer for the past 25 years. I trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London on the Opera Course many moons ago. Once I finished the course I thought that was that, I was an opera singer and I was set for life. Oh how wrong I was. Life has a knack of sending you on many an adventure, doesn't it? Yes I did start out as an opera singer and I worked for Scottish Opera, English Touring Opera, The Opera Project and even did a little bit of work for The Royal Opera but then, about a year after I graduated, I auditioned for Jerry Springer: The Opera at the National Theatre, got it and side-stepped into the world of musical theatre.

So from 2003 - 2015 I flitted about the musical theatre world. The last show I did was in Frinton-on-Sea and was a sublime version of Oliver!, in a tent. After this I decided to take a break from performing. This was for a variety of reasons. I wanted to spend more time teaching, I wanted to start a musical theatre choir and I was having quite a hard time dealing with rejection (this is something we will cover in a later post).

So for the past few years I have been learning more about how the voice works, how to look after your voice (I am a qualified Vocal Health First Aider don't you know!) and I am particularly interested in performance anxiety and how to help people overcome their demons.

I am hoping that through The Enlightened Singer I can impart some knowledge but also that we can learn a bit together along the way. Please feel free to contact me with questions or suggestions for things to discuss. You can join the Facebook group by clicking here or you can email: enlightenedsinger@gmail.com

Until next time sing out loud and sing out proud.
